Home Recording Studio and Music Making Tips & Tricks - About MusicRepo

Home Recording Studio and Music Making Tips & Tricks - About MusicRepo Welcome to Music Repo. This is the YouTube home of my tips, tricks and how to guides on music making in general and home recording in particular. And here is my home recording and music making blog: http://bit.ly/2Dd3HN4 As a child I was lucky enough to learn both violin and piano. But all that classical training meant my learning was really based around reading notation and passing exams rather than on creativity and self-expression. Don’t get me wrong, I love classical music but I really wanted to go beyond classical and branch out into other genres. I just didn’t know where to start. So what happened is for years I abandoned my playing and let it all slide. However, the thing that really brought me back into the world of music making is the explosion in affordable recording software and hardware and the endless possibilities for creativity and experimentation on a budget. So a few years ago, I went back to college and studied for a master’s degree in Music Technology and for years I taught stuff like MIDI Programming and Computer Sound Design at a University. That’s where I realised that home recording technology is amazing but getting to grips with it can be a bit daunting, hence my desire to make recording accessible to all. But one thing has held me back over the years …. and you might find this surprising. It’s that rigid classical training. I’m almost a prisoner of notation and sheet music. It’s a bit like wanting to be a writer but only being skilled at typing. So recently I’ve added this gorgeous electric violin to my home recording studio and now I’m on a quest to discard the sheet music and learn how to improvise and use my ears more! Here at Music Repo I’m aiming to build a complete repository of information about home recording and music technology for beginners, as well as musings on rhythm, scales, improvisation and composition. To help you repossess your music making dreams. And reposition your music making from beyond that rigid classical base to the world of rock, folk, techno, jazz, blues, and electronica. My mission in life is to make all this home recording and music making stuff accessible to everyone - regardless of whether you are starting from scratch, rediscovering old skills or just generally confused about where to start with home recording. Discovering Rock Violin - 1. The Major Pentatonic Scale
There's something fundamentally different about the melodic and harmonic construction of rock music from that of Classical music. This tutorial gives a hint at this difference through the study of the major pentatonic scale. About the book: http://bit.ly/2OihCX9 The author of Exploring Jazz Violin, Chris Haigh returns with Discovering Rock Violin, a practical, down to earth, and in-depth tutor book covering all aspects of pop, folk and rock violin technique. Over 150 different rock violinists are referred to in detail covering a range of styles including blues, folk rock, country rock, progressive rock, jazz rock and heavy metal. Exploring a wide variety of technical aspects including chords, scales, soloing and effects, the book is accompanied by a CD containing demonstrations, play-along tracks and exercises performed by Chris Haigh on violin with a live backing band. Ideal for the budding rock star, or classical player looking for something a little different!

FCTR: Basic Scales for Improvisation
In this video we cover three basic scales used in improv solos in pop, blues, rock, country and bluegrass. Matt defines the Major pentatonic, minor pentatonic and blues scales and explains how to find them in any key (using the numbering system we outlined last week), and also how to apply them over chords, depending on musical style. Drill these scales in all 12 keys and you'll be able to step up and create a solo on the spot on most blues, rock, country or bluegrass songs!
