How To Use NEGATIVE Melody To Write Beautiful Music [Negative Harmony]
Complete Chord Mastery course: http://bit.ly/38qPUkk A while ago on YouTube and other social medias there was a lot of interest in a theory called Negative Harmony. Some people called it a fad, but I welcome any and every interest that musicians may have in learning theory :) Also, I think Negative Harmony is fun to use. What nobody is talking about though (but they should) is Negative Melody. Wait, there is such a thing as Negative Melody? Well yes, it turns out that not only Negative Melody exists, but that composers knew about this for a long time before the name 'Negative Harmony' even existed. I mean there are examples of it from J.S. Bach! It really speaks to the power of an idea when after nearly 3 centuries you keep finding new sounds by applying it... In practice Negative Melody is simply applying Negative Harmony to a single melodic line rather than a chord progression... but this sounds needlessly complex. Why don't we go and see what Negative Melody is and how it can create beautiful melodies? Today we see how an absolute master of melody (the composer Sergei Rachmaninoff) uses the Negative Melody trick to write one of his most famous melodies... by lifting it from another great composer and applying Negative Melody:) Watch the video here... and then do the same to create your melodies! The video of the Paganini Capriccio with Hula Hoops is from the channel "TwoSetViolin" featuring Hilary Hahn. The guys are funny, and she's an amazing player. Home Recording Studio and Music Making Tips & Tricks - About MusicRepo

Home Recording Studio and Music Making Tips & Tricks - About MusicRepo Welcome to Music Repo. This is the YouTube home of my tips, tricks and how to guides on music making in general and home recording in particular. And here is my home recording and music making blog: http://bit.ly/2Dd3HN4 As a child I was lucky enough to learn both violin and piano. But all that classical training meant my learning was really based around reading notation and passing exams rather than on creativity and self-expression. Don’t get me wrong, I love classical music but I really wanted to go beyond classical and branch out into other genres. I just didn’t know where to start. So what happened is for years I abandoned my playing and let it all slide. However, the thing that really brought me back into the world of music making is the explosion in affordable recording software and hardware and the endless possibilities for creativity and experimentation on a budget. So a few years ago, I went back to college and studied for a master’s degree in Music Technology and for years I taught stuff like MIDI Programming and Computer Sound Design at a University. That’s where I realised that home recording technology is amazing but getting to grips with it can be a bit daunting, hence my desire to make recording accessible to all. But one thing has held me back over the years …. and you might find this surprising. It’s that rigid classical training. I’m almost a prisoner of notation and sheet music. It’s a bit like wanting to be a writer but only being skilled at typing. So recently I’ve added this gorgeous electric violin to my home recording studio and now I’m on a quest to discard the sheet music and learn how to improvise and use my ears more! Here at Music Repo I’m aiming to build a complete repository of information about home recording and music technology for beginners, as well as musings on rhythm, scales, improvisation and composition. To help you repossess your music making dreams. And reposition your music making from beyond that rigid classical base to the world of rock, folk, techno, jazz, blues, and electronica. My mission in life is to make all this home recording and music making stuff accessible to everyone - regardless of whether you are starting from scratch, rediscovering old skills or just generally confused about where to start with home recording. So, If you want to be the first to see my how to guides on home recording and music making, do make sure you hit that subscribe button in the video above. And bookmark this site! Let’s go on this journey together. Discovering Rock Violin - 1. The Major Pentatonic Scale
There's something fundamentally different about the melodic and harmonic construction of rock music from that of Classical music. This tutorial gives a hint at this difference through the study of the major pentatonic scale. About the book: http://bit.ly/2OihCX9 The author of Exploring Jazz Violin, Chris Haigh returns with Discovering Rock Violin, a practical, down to earth, and in-depth tutor book covering all aspects of pop, folk and rock violin technique. Over 150 different rock violinists are referred to in detail covering a range of styles including blues, folk rock, country rock, progressive rock, jazz rock and heavy metal. Exploring a wide variety of technical aspects including chords, scales, soloing and effects, the book is accompanied by a CD containing demonstrations, play-along tracks and exercises performed by Chris Haigh on violin with a live backing band. Ideal for the budding rock star, or classical player looking for something a little different!

Practice and Prepare With Nicky Introduction
Welcome back to new videos! So excited to share with you two different sets of videos which we will be running simultaneously. ‘With Nicky’ will be exclusively about practice (yay!) which, strangely enough, we haven’t really specifically talked about that much so far. We’ll be breaking up practice concepts into individual tips such as how to organise your time, how to stay concentrated and what to do with the time you have. Alongside that, we’ll be helping everyone who has a place at the Benedetti Sessions next year to prepare with us. Preparation for any single event, whether that be a workshop, or a concert or even a lesson can be a bumpy road! It’s not something which is linear and so you have to enter into a journey of preparation as one that’s going to be a bit up and down. Sometimes you’ll feel like you’re improving, sometimes it might feel like you’re getting worse 😱, but don’t worry, it’s consistency that is so important. Over the next couple of months, we’ll be delving deep into the repertoire we are learning and tying that to the more fundamental basics of playing. We will be looking at topics like storytelling, approaching the style and attitude of the piece, the physicality of playing and how to feel ready for an event or workshop coming up. The first ‘Prepare with Nicky’ video will be out at the end of this week 🥳 and ‘Practice with Nicky’ starts on Tuesday next week (29 October). We’d love to hear from you. Please subscribe to the YouTube channel (click on the bell for notifications when our new videos are out) and use #preparewithnicky anywhere you like! Huge thanks to our partners Classic FM, The Strad, The Violin Channel, WQXR, ABRSM and Charanga who will be sharing the videos with their audiences. These videos have been supported by ESTA UK, MiSST- The Andrew Lloyd Webber Programme and Oasby Music Group and we are very grateful for their support. Film: Jaegerfilm

excerpts from the world premiere of Louis Andriessen's La Girò, for violin and large ensemble. MITO Settembre Musica Festival - 5 September, 2011, Milan, Italy. Monica Germino, violin/voice; David Atherton, conductor; London Sinfonietta; Sound Intermedia Louis Andriessen's La Girò for violin and large ensemble features Monica Germino as soloist, and has a distinctly Italian theme as the composer explains: "When Enzo Restagno asked me to write a piece for this year's MITO Festival, I was honoured because in the early sixties I lived in Italy for a year, and ever since then I have felt a strong bond with that country. In La Girò I am musing about a composer I admire a lot: maestro Antonio Vivaldi. The title refers to Anna Girò, Vivaldi's favourite singer. The piece would not have become the 'performance' it is without its dedicatee, the violinist Monica Germino. The soloist (La Girò, perhaps?) does not only play the violin. She also sings an Italian song, whispers and talks, tells stories and dreams. The ensemble consists of a small chamber orchestra, with an added piano, harp, cimbalom and some percussion. The piece has four parts: the first three form a kind of concertino while the actual musical drama takes place in the fourth, slow part." selected performances: world premiere: MITO Settembre Musica Festival: 5 & 6 September in Milan & Torino (2011) by Louis Andriessen 5 September, 2011 MITO Settembre Musica Festival world premieres: Louis Andriessen's La Girò, Harrison Birtwistle, Matteo Franceschini & Fabio Vacchi Monica Germino, violin/voice London Sinfonietta; David Atherton, conductor Sound Intermedia venue: Teatro Dal Verme; Milan, Italy Live broadcast by Italian National Radio 3 6 September, 21.00 - MITO Settembre Musica Festival venue: Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi; Torino, Italy info London Sinfonietta: http://bit.ly/2J6puJv info MITO: http://bit.ly/2MZp0WC 2012: 12 January, 20.15 Netherlands premiere of La Girò (2011) by Louis Andriessen Donderdagavond series - PROMS: Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam, the Netherlands program: The dreams of Anna Girò plus music by Zygmunt Krauze Monica Germino, violin/voice; Reinbert de Leeuw, conductor; Asko|Schönberg Live broadcast by Dutch National Radio 4 (NTR) 28 February, 20.00 USA premiere of La Girò (2011) by Louis Andriessen Green Umbrella Series: Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A. No backing track, just loops. I stopped to listen to this guy for a good twenty minutes. Before this he played Clocks by Coldplay and one of his own compositions, and afterwards Wicked Game. I don't think I've seen as many donations to a busker before, and he sold at least ten CDs in the time I was there. Apologies for the abrupt ending - my phone ran out of memory. http://bit.ly/2MYMDkr

If we start at the heart of your home studio it is your computer (or tablet) and your recording software. This is where you record, edit, mix and share your recordings. Whether it’s simple tracks or complex multi-tracked epic compositions. But before you worry too much about the software, it is important to get the hardware right. No amount of fabulously featured recording software will make up for poor studio hardware. This video will show you how to record your electric guitar step-by-step in each of these three ways. This is a recording tutorial for guitarists who complete beginners to home studio recording. It is not an advanced video on recording. But by the end you will know exactly what guitar recording gear you need, and the basics of how to set it up. The focus in this video is on the guitar recording GEAR that you need. The best studio equipment to do the job. First Year Playing the Electric Guitar - Month by Month Progress
I started playing the electric guitar about one year ago today when I was 22. Over the past year I've been recording many clips of things I've been learning and I thought it would be cool to share my progress for other people getting started. Most of these videos I never expected to share, so please excuse the sound and video quality :). I've been entirely self taught learning through different resources online. I tried to play every day when I was around my guitar, but with work and other things there were some long periods where I wasn't able to play. But for the most part I've been pretty consistent. I will be uploading many more song covers in the future, so stick around if you'd like to see more! Most keyboards have a USB MIDI output so you should be able to connect the piano or keyboard directly up to the PC or Mac. How To Play "Hallelujah" On The Piano
Getting Started On The Piano (NEW free video series!): ►http://bit.ly/2DJcuqr Since its first recording in 1984, there have been over 100 recordings made of Hallelujah, the beautiful song written and made famous by Leonard Cohen. A notorious perfectionist, he is said to have originally written 80 verses. My favorite explanation of this song's meaning comes from Cohen himself, which is that many kinds of hallelujahs do exist, and all the perfect and broken hallelujahs have equal value. In the video, we'll show you how to play Hallelujah using a lead sheet. A lead sheet contains treble clef notation, chord names and lyrics, and we have one available for you to download for free! You'll learn two different ways to approach the song. In one, you'll play the notated melody and use the chord names to create your own left hand part, and the other is to forget about that notated melody altogether and create an accompaniment for the song using chords in both hands. This is a very useful skill for playing as an accompanist for yourself or another singer, or in a band setting. Hallelujah! Pattern # 1 (RH) - 0:39 I actually make a mistake at 0:47 (scatter brain!). I say the first 'three' notes. I mean the first 'two'.
