My son Lewis died by suicide on the 15th May 2021. He was 20 years young and a gentle, kind, clever and thoughtful boy. My world has stopped… I picked my fiddle up a few days after he died abd this tune came out. It is the only tune my fiddle can play at the moment so I thought I’d share. The 1-2-4 lick is a simple three note lick or phrase for violin which, because the fingering slots easily into the blues or pentatonic scales, is applicable in any key. It also bears extensive repetition, as demonstrated here. As a hemiola or three beat phrase, it has rhythmic interest when played in 4/4. It works well in blues, jazz, rock or funk . Brown Eyed Girl (fiddle lesson)
Brown Eyed Girl is one of Van Morrison's biggest hits, and is an essential part of the repertoire of most wedding, party and function bands. In this fiddle lesson, i walk through all the different parts of the song, with different suggestions and strategies for fiddle accompaniment. To learn more about rock violin, and the techniques demonstrated here, see my book Discovering Rock Violin, published by Schott. "A great achievement...fantastic book"- Mark Wood "I love the fact that your book features a lot of great players in the rock world who, many of whom I have always felt were underappreciated. This is something I was considering doing with my book, but instead I decided to focus on theory and techniques, which your book covers extensively as well. ...Thank you again for writing a book on a topic which is long overdue" -Joe Deninzon "If there's a more entertaining pedagogical book than this published in 2012 I'd like to see it. Chris Haigh celebrates the violinist in the rock band in an offering as full of laughs as a Spinal Tap concert" -David Lasserson. Da Slockit Light (fiddle lesson)
Da Slockit Light (the dying light) is a tune by Tom Anderson, from Shetland. He made a major contribution to Shetland folk music as a fiddler, composer and educator. He was responsible for putting traditional fiddle on the syllabus in Shetland schools. In this fiddle lesson I show the basic tune, with on-screen sheet music, and suggest some ornamentation. I have a collection of 13 Shetland fiddle tunes, available free as a pdf to everyone who joins me on Patreon. https://bit.ly/36FeePh I have a book "Exploring Folk Fiddle" which examines many aspects of folk fiddling, including bowing, ornamentation tune forms and how to play for dancing. I have other books available on Schott; follow the links below to take a look Exploring Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3i3qPPM UK https://amzn.to/2HjUpnt Beginning Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3cr5Cy2 UK https://amzn.to/3crqEwy Exploring Folk Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32YFUhc UK https://amzn.to/33ZpxR1 Discovering Rock Violin USA https://amzn.to/3kONQHV UK https://amzn.to/2RY88Tb Exploring Klezmer Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32ZgYXd UK https://amzn.to/3mRKdCX French Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/330NeJa UK https://amzn.to/363850D Hungarian Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/32Xu7ji UK https://amzn.to/33YnsEO To look at or buy these and my other books, go to bit.ly/31ZWmgm _________________________________________________ I have two sets of professional subscription online videos on jazz; Exploring Jazz Violin, produced by MusicGurus https://bit.ly/3iVwt7p ____________________________________ My website is https://bit.ly/3jrBLb7, with links to almost every fiddle style you can think of.
