Kashmir, by Led Zeppelin (violin lesson)
Kashmir, by Led Zeppelin, has some classic rock riffs, and the modal and cinematic nature of the solo sections make it an ideal vehicle for rock violin. In this violin lesson I go through each section of the piece, suggesting different approaches. To learn more about rock violin, and the techniques demonstrated here, see my book Discovering Rock Violin, published by Schott. "A great achievement...fantastic book"- Mark Wood "I love the fact that your book features a lot of great players in the rock world who, many of whom I have always felt were underappreciated. This is something I was considering doing with my book, but instead I decided to focus on theory and techniques, which your book covers extensively as well. ...Thank you again for writing a book on a topic which is long overdue" -Joe Deninzon "If there's a more entertaining pedagogical book than this published in 2012 I'd like to see it. Chris Haigh celebrates the violinist in the rock band in an offering as full of laughs as a Spinal Tap concert" -David Lasserson. Wellerman -sea shanty (fiddle lesson)
Here's a fiddle lesson on The Wellerman. This is a sea shanty made famous by Nathan Evans and the Longest Johns. I show the basic melody, with onscreen sheet music, in the key of Cm, plus the more fiddle friendly Dm. I suggest some ornaments, drones and double stops, and demonstrate some possible backing fiddle parts. I have an online folk fiddle course at The Academy of Folk; www.https://academyoffolk.com/ I have a book "Exploring Folk Fiddle" which examines many aspects of folk fiddling, including bowing, ornamentation tune forms and how to play for dancing. I have other books available on Schott; follow the links below to take a look Exploring Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3i3qPPM UK https://amzn.to/2HjUpnt Beginning Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3cr5Cy2 UK https://amzn.to/3crqEwy Exploring Folk Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32YFUhc UK https://amzn.to/33ZpxR1 Discovering Rock Violin USA https://amzn.to/3kONQHV UK https://amzn.to/2RY88Tb Exploring Klezmer Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32ZgYXd UK https://amzn.to/3mRKdCX French Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/330NeJa UK https://amzn.to/363850D Hungarian Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/32Xu7ji UK https://amzn.to/33YnsEO To look at or buy these and my other books, go to bit.ly/31ZWmgm _________________________________________________ I have two sets of professional subscription online videos on jazz; Exploring Jazz Violin, produced by MusicGurus https://bit.ly/3iVwt7p __________________________________________________ Band in a Box The backing tracks on this video, and indeed all my Fiddle Channel videos, are produced using software called Band in a Box. Analysis of the Electric Violin Solo on "Ride or Die"
In this video, I share the transcription of my solo on my new single, "Ride or Die" and talk about what my thought process was on creating this solo. This solo was actually almost entirely improvised in the moment, rather than "written". I spent a few minutes figuring out exactly what I wanted to play in the last couple measures, but the bulk of the solo was a true improv and was pretty much one take.

One of the hardest things for violinists in cover bands is finding parts in songs that didn't have string parts in the original version. Here's what I play in my band's version of Sweet Caroline and an explanation of why I make the decisions I make. Spare Change: https://bit.ly/3uQcXQP
