Ornamentation on the fiddle. What's the Point?
This video looks at fiddle ornamentation across many styles, and attempts to explain where individual ornaments came from, and what musical purpose they serve. I consider the rolls, cuts and slides of Irish fiddle, the birl or bowed triplet of Scotland, the drones of English fiddling, the trills of Sweden, the Krekhts of klezmer, and the bowing, drones and hammer-ons of American old time and contest fiddle. Much of the text of this video comes from an article I wrote in "The Living Tradition" Magazine (Issue 110) I explain and demonstrate many of the ornaments and concepts described here, in my book "Exploring Folk Fiddle", published by Schott. https://bit.ly/3uLLrD8 To look at or buy my other books, go to. https://bit.ly/3lvRBDu The audio tracks on the video are taken from my CD "Off the Wall". I still have copies for sale! For more information about the various fiddle styles discussed here, see my website at https://bit.ly/3jrBLb7. Joseph, Joseph was written in 1923 by Nellie Casman and Samuel Steinberg, for a Yiddish Theatre production in New York. It was made famous in 1938 by the Andrews Sisters. In this violin lesson I demonstrate the basic melody of the chorus, and show how it can be played in either Gypsy Jazz or klezmer style. Joseph, Joseph also has a verse, which I also play, though instrumental versions often leave this out. _____________________________________________ Want to help support my channel? https://www.patreon.com/thefiddlechannel _______________________________________________ To learn more about jazz violin, see my books "Exploring jazz violin" and "Beginning jazz violin" published by Schott To look at or buy these and my other books, go to bit.ly/31ZWmgm ______________________________ Exploring Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3i3qPPM UK https://amzn.to/2HjUpnt Beginning Jazz Violin USA https://amzn.to/3cr5Cy2 UK https://amzn.to/3crqEwy Exploring Folk Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32YFUhc UK https://amzn.to/33ZpxR1 Discovering Rock Violin USA https://amzn.to/3kONQHV UK https://amzn.to/2RY88Tb Exploring Klezmer Fiddle USA https://amzn.to/32ZgYXd UK https://amzn.to/3mRKdCX French Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/330NeJa UK https://amzn.to/363850D Hungarian Fiddle Tunes USA https://amzn.to/32Xu7ji UK https://amzn.to/33YnsEO _________________________________________________ I have three sets of professional subscription online videos Exploring Jazz Violin, produced by MusicGurus https://bit.ly/3iVwt7p More about my jazz violin course on Musicgurus: It comes in two parts, each including 26 short lessons. In this fiddle tutorial, I describe and demonstrate fiddle chopping or, "the chop", from the most basic single chop to some complex funky grooves. I refer to numerous other fiddle chopping videos, particularly those by Casey Driessen and Darol Anger. I discuss the appropriateness of chopping in various contexts, and warn about the dangers of over-doing it. After explaining the history of chopping and the basic principles, I show 9 different chopping grooves; 1. The Casey Driessen Baseline Chop 2. The basic rock groove 3. The melodic rock groove 4 The threes pattern 5. The Bo Diddley pattern 6. The basic Latin groove 7. The Clave 8. Guitarists learn a finger shape for every chord. In this lesson I show how fiddle players can do the same thing, using two-note finger patterns. The easiest pair of notes to find has the root on the top, and the third below, on the next string down. Using this finger pattern it is very easy to change from major to minor, by lowering the lower note by a semitone. I also show how to find adjacent patterns for the I,IV and V chords. These techniques are useful for fiddlers in a variety of contexts; accompaniment with off- beat chops; long notes in country music; shuffles in bluegrass or old time, backing in Gypsy music, or rock accompaniment.
