Cooley's Reel & The Musical Priest
Two reels which I decided to play slightly slower than normal and to a rather funky beat. I originally recorded this set of tunes in late 2003 and they still sound quite fresh. I used a 'fishman pre-amp and piezo pick up', on an old French violin which was given to me by a neighbour. The first tune is called Cooley's Reel and was composed by a well known Irish box player called Joe Cooley. The second tune is normally played in a higher key, but on my version I chose to play the Musical Priest in a lower key and in a slightly more folk rock way. I hope you enjoy this track and the few photos' I took when I visited Northumberland on holiday.

Celtic Fusion. A fiddle lesson on crossover of Celtic with rock, jazz and bluegrass.
A fiddle lesson showing how to take a traditional Celtic tune and add elements of rock, jazz and bluegrass, to make a Celtic crossover or fusion style. Drawing on the style of players such as Martin Hayes and Ashley McIsaac, I look at various techniques not normally used in traditional Irish and Scottish fiddle playing. These include syncopation, using open string drones, blue notes, extended and distorted notes. I use the tune "Cooley's Reel" as an example. I have a book "Exploring folk fiddle" which looks in detail at many aspects of folk fiddle playing and repertoire, plus two books on Jazz violin and one on rock violin; see the links below for details of these and my other books.
