Sept. 25, 2017 | Robin Hilton -- It's hard to think of an artist who's brought more joy to more people, across more generations — and in more ways — than Steve Martin. In the 1970s, he won the hearts of young children for his playful appearances with The Muppets while simultaneously charming legions of older fans with his subversive standup routines. Later, as an actor, he wrote and starred in some of the most memorable comedies (and a few dramas) of all time, while writing books, plays and even a Broadway musical. Throughout his 50-year career, one constant in Steve Martin's life has been the banjo. It was a staple of his early standup shows and even fans who only wanted to laugh couldn't help but marvel at his playing. Over the years, he's continued to perform and record with country and bluegrass luminaries like Earl Scruggs, Dolly Parton, Vince Gill and others. These days Martin is working on music full-time. He's just released a stellar bluegrass album he recorded with The Steep Canyon Rangers called (perfectly) The Long-Awaited Album, a record filled with often hilarious story songs and world-class performances. Martin's set with The Steep Canyon Rangers at the Tiny Desk was at times thrilling, particularly his opening solo for the song "So Familiar." But it was also playful, comical and a joy to witness. At the end of the typical three-song performance, the group graciously decided to do one more called "Caroline," a hilarious, first-person account of how not to handle a breakup. I'm learning a new tune everyday. Today I learned another tune off of Alec Finn and Frankie Gavin's old duo recording. The album titles on this particular recording are a bit messed up, and so the name of this tune is not Sean Frank's like it's listed, but Mother's Delight. This tune is often played in another key (Em) but I am playing it in Frankie Gavin's setting, in D, and the fiddle is tune up approximately one half-step. Haste to the Wedding is one of the most widely played jigs. It was originally written by the Scots composer James Oswald around 1750. It was popularised in the operetta "The Elopement" and soon was widely played throughout the British Isles and North America. In this fiddle lesson I give two versions of the tune. This is one of those classic tunes that I feel most fiddle players will have had a go at playing at some stage in their musical playing career. I guess it fits into the OldTime genre, although it could quite easily be played by a Bluegrasss band as well. Quick beginner tutorial for Camtasia: I'm going to show you how you can mirror a video or flip a video or make it go in the other direction in terms of how it looks on your canvas, while it keeps playing forward. I am using Techsmith Camtasia 2021, but previous versions should also work. You can flip or mirror a video manually but it might not be very accurate so in order to flip along the Y-axis, 180 degrees, we type the value exactly in the Properties panel. We look also at creating a copy of the video and creating a mirror of the video playing in two different directions. In Camtasia, you can transform a video or object along three axis - X, Y and Z, but in this tutorial, we look at the Y-axis. And I'm going to introduce you to the delicate blue tape. This is a little more expensive at the store. It has some writing on it here. The 3M says Edge Lock. There may be some other brands, but you want the "delicate" which will come off easier and is a little thinner and will create that line that you want when you're doing an accent wall or you want sharp corners. We'll use 2 inch. 2 inch wide. So we're going to paint gold, a decorative finish with this gold leaf oil paint. It's a little thin. I have to be careful for drips. And I've got my mini-roller once again standing by. The first step is to apply some blue tape to create my line. And I'm going to get right up into the corner. And while I'm holding this tight, I'm pulling this out so it's all one piece, adjusting it as I go along. There. Now I would do this all the way around the surface that is to be accented. But in this case, I'm happy with this corner and let's go ahead and roller out some decorative gold leaf. Taking it slow. I don't mind overlapping onto that blue tape. Wow. It's more solid than I thought it would be going on. It's really cool. Let's make sure that drip doesn't come down. Now I could do this with a pole, but I'm up on the ladder and it feels like I have more control. Now I'm going to back-roll it. All one direction. Very smooth. Very interesting. So I'll continue around the room here. Okay, so this gold paint, this gold leaf paint is really something. Let's remove this blue tape and see how our line is. I'm not sure about this corner. Yeah, yeah. It needs some touch-ups there. Okay. As expected, I'm going to come in with a very small brush with my white ceiling paint and do a little touch-up right there, But as you can see, the line is relatively nice. And you can do an accent wall, you can do an accent ceiling, and if you want that sharp line get good with your delicate tape. Delicate blue tape. There's also a Frog's tape that's green, but it's more expensive. And you can come out with a very nice result.

The Rights of Man is a well-known hornpipe widely played by fiddle players in England, Ireland and Scotland. In this fiddle tutorial I show two versions of the tune. Firstly the basic melody, with some discussion of the dotted rhythm, triplets and phrasing which are typical of hornpipes. Secondly a version with Irish fiddle ornamentation based on the playing of Fergal Scahill. This includes cuts, rolls, drones, extra triplets, and some chromatic notes. Odesskaya is a Ukrainian klezmer fiddle tune from Odessa. This was a great centre of Jewish culture in the 19th Century, and there are many excellent klezmer fiddle tunes from Odessa. In this lesson I demonstrate the basic melody, and then look at violin ornamentation to enrich the tune, such as double stops and drones to emphasise the chord changes, and klezmer ornaments such as the glissando and krekhts. I use sheet music on screen throughout, and a free pdf copy of Odesskaya is available to anyone who subscribes to the channel. I play the Musical Priest in a lower key than normal, as it works so well following on from the Butterfly. I put this video together as I was practising for Thursday's, St Patrick's night gig. Also, I was testing out my camera and mic to see what it was recording like. Of course the Butterfly is a Slip Jig and the Musical Priest is a Reel, but I think the combination of the two tunes seems to work quite well. I added guitar and bass, as I wanted the other band members to have an idea what the chord structure was like, as the Butterfly is slightly unusual like many other slip jigs. If you are wondering how to keep track of the beginning of the round using this technique, click "SHOW MORE" here for the answer. Original description: After a brief introduction into how to knit in the round using the Magic Loop method, I show where tension problems commonly occur with this technique. I then show you a small change in how to work the Magic Loop method that solves those problems perfectly. Yay! No more tension issues at the gaps when knitting it the round using Magic Loop! Answer to the most common question: Several people have asked the same question. So let me answer it for everyone here. The question is some variation of this: "How do you know where the beginning of the round is with this method?" The simple answer is "Place a BOR [beginning of round] marker and you'll always know where it is." I didn't realize how common it is for people to use one of the magic loop gaps to mark the BOR. I always use a marker so it didn't occur to me to address this in the video. Just slip the BOR marker every time you come around to it. Then the gaps are not trying to serve a dual purpose so it isn't a problem to move it a few stitches every time to come to one of them. If that doesn't answer the question, please let me know in a comment.

This is a simple folk arrangement for fiddle, emphasising techniques such as drones and vibrato trills, typical of Hungarian and Romanian folk musicians. It was collected by Bartok in Transylvania, which was at the time a part of Hungary. It is one of many similar tunes found in my book "Hungarian Fiddle Tunes" published by Schott Music, and its archaic quality is emphasised by melodic "Quint Shifting" and use of the Lydian mode.
