Cooley's Reel & The Musical Priest
Two reels which I decided to play slightly slower than normal and to a rather funky beat. I originally recorded this set of tunes in late 2003 and they still sound quite fresh. I used a 'fishman pre-amp and piezo pick up', on an old French violin which was given to me by a neighbour. The first tune is called Cooley's Reel and was composed by a well known Irish box player called Joe Cooley. The second tune is normally played in a higher key, but on my version I chose to play the Musical Priest in a lower key and in a slightly more folk rock way. I hope you enjoy this track and the few photos' I took when I visited Northumberland on holiday.

The ll/V/I, or 2-5-1, or two-five one, is an essential part of most jazz chord sequences. In this video, I explain what it is, how to recognise it, and what to do with it. I also explain how, for a beginner improviser, why the ll/V/l is a welcome respite in what can often be difficult and confusing set of chords. This double-stopped, harmony scale is incredibly useful in many types of fiddle playing. In this fiddle lesson I explain what the scale is, demonstrate its use in folk, country, western swing and Gypsy fiddle styles, and give some exercises to help get your fingers accustomed to the scale. A common question we get from new electric string players is whether they should use individual stomp boxes or a multi-effects unit. The answer is that each player is going to have to decide which is best for them and their situation. There are top touring pros who use multi-effects units and there are top touring pros who use individual stomp boxes. Both are completely legitimate ways to get your sound. We'll discuss the pros and cons of each set-up so you can make an educated decision about which is best for you!

Bach Chaconne | 64 Variations | Lawrence Power, Sharia Johnson, Héloïse Werner
Bach’s epic Chaconne was written shortly after the death of his beloved wife and forms part of one his most personal statements, SEI SOLO (‘You are alone’) a collection of compositions for unaccompanied Violin. In Bach’s Chaconne a seemingly simple 4 bar harmonic sequence repeats itself 64 times, almost like a musical necklace with each part of the chain more complex and captivating than the next. You can follow the variations as they progress in the numbers at the bottom of the screen. The Chaconne as a form, but this piece in particular, has fascinated and influenced music across the ages and continues to do so. In this film Lawrence Power performs on viola, accompanied by dancer Sharia Johnson and soprano Héloïse Werner. It is filmed live across five floors of the Barge House on London’s Southbank and is an exploration of light, time, companionship and solitude. Here's a fiddle lesson on The Wellerman. This is a sea shanty made famous by Nathan Evans and the Longest Johns. I show the basic melody, with onscreen sheet music, in the key of Cm, plus the more fiddle friendly Dm. I suggest some ornaments, drones and double stops, and demonstrate some possible backing fiddle parts. Analysis of the Electric Violin Solo on "Ride or Die"
In this video, I share the transcription of my solo on my new single, "Ride or Die" and talk about what my thought process was on creating this solo. This solo was actually almost entirely improvised in the moment, rather than "written". I spent a few minutes figuring out exactly what I wanted to play in the last couple measures, but the bulk of the solo was a true improv and was pretty much one take.
