Bach Chaconne | 64 Variations | Lawrence Power, Sharia Johnson, Héloïse Werner
Bach’s epic Chaconne was written shortly after the death of his beloved wife and forms part of one his most personal statements, SEI SOLO (‘You are alone’) a collection of compositions for unaccompanied Violin. In Bach’s Chaconne a seemingly simple 4 bar harmonic sequence repeats itself 64 times, almost like a musical necklace with each part of the chain more complex and captivating than the next. You can follow the variations as they progress in the numbers at the bottom of the screen. The Chaconne as a form, but this piece in particular, has fascinated and influenced music across the ages and continues to do so. In this film Lawrence Power performs on viola, accompanied by dancer Sharia Johnson and soprano Héloïse Werner. It is filmed live across five floors of the Barge House on London’s Southbank and is an exploration of light, time, companionship and solitude.
